The United Workers Union are seeking a dynamic and proactive Communications Advisor to join our team. This role is offered on a permanent full-time basis and is open to applicants from all major capital cities.
The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping and delivering internal and external communications strategies, ensuring clear, consistent, and engaging messaging that supports our organisational objectives. You will work closely with senior leaders and cross-functional teams to promote the organisation’s mission, vision, and values while enhancing our reputation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Communications Planning
- Develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies aligned with organisational goals.
- Advise senior leaders on communications best practices and approaches, providing strategic counsel on key issues.
- Monitor media coverage and industry trends, providing regular updates to internal teams.
Content Creation & Management
- Write, edit, and produce clear, compelling content for various platforms, including press releases, newsletters, website copy, and internal communications.
- Develop engaging content (written, graphic, and video) tailored for different channels and audiences, ensuring alignment with campaign objectives.
- Ensure content is on-brand, accurate, and tailored to the target audience, maintaining a consistent tone and style across all channels.
Internal Communications
- Contribute to as directed, the creation and delivery of internal communications, ensuring employees are kept informed, engaged, and aligned with organisational objectives.
Crisis Communications
- Play a key role in crisis communications, helping to manage the flow of information during challenging situations.
- Work closely with leadership to develop and deliver timely, clear, and appropriate messaging to both internal and external stakeholders.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including portfolio teams, employees, members, partners, and the public.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including marketing, politics, HR, and legal, to align communications strategies and messaging.
Event Support
- Assist in the planning and execution of internal and external events, ensuring effective communication of key messages.
- Provide support with event promotions, including content creation and social media management.
Monitoring & Reporting
- Monitor the effectiveness of communication strategies, tracking key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Provide regular reports on communications performance and recommend adjustments to improve impact.
Growth & Retention
- Contribute to content strategies and campaigns that drive audience growth, engagement, and retention.
- Implement tactics to nurture and expand digital communities, fostering long-term member engagement.
- Analyse audience behaviours and preferences to tailor content that enhances the audience and member experience.
Brand & Reputation Management
- Ensure content reflects and enhances the UWU’s brand identity and values.
- Monitor online and media sentiment and engage with audiences to maintain a positive brand image.
- Support crisis communications and reputation management efforts through timely, accurate, and thoughtful content.
Collaboration, Stakeholder Engagement & Active Team Member
- Work closely with the teams across UWU to ensure cohesive messaging.
- Liaise with external vendors or freelancers, as needed, for specialised content production.
- Cover other roles of the Industrial and Workplace Campaign Team necessary due to leave, assignment or other operational necessities.
Trend Analysis & Innovation
- Stay up-to-date with digital trends, tools, and platforms to innovate communications strategies.
- Experiment with new content formats to engage and grow audiences.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
To perform the role of a Development Lead, the successful individual should demonstrate the following:
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field and/or
- Proven experience (3+ years) in a communications role, ideally within a member focused organisation.
Technical Skills
- Proficiency in content management systems (e.g., WordPress), social media platforms, and analytics tools.
- Familiarity with design tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or similar.
- Knowledge of SEO, UX, and email marketing best practices.
Soft Skills
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail.
- Strong understanding of digital communications tools, social media platforms, and analytics.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels.
- Commitment to and understanding of UWU’s values and priorities.
Desirable
- Experience with graphic design or multimedia content creation.
- Knowledge of SEO and content marketing.

To perform this job, you will also be required to have or obtain and maintain:
- Right of Entry Permits;
- Valid Australian Driver’s License; and

REMUNERATION
An attractive remuneration package will be offered to the successful applicant, which will include:
- Salary commensurate with demonstrated skills and experience;
- 16% superannuation;
- 6 weeks annual leave plus 25% leave loading
