Your Role

The Senior Archaeologist/Cultural Heritage Advisor provides leadership and expertise in cultural heritage management, ensuring that Bunurong cultural heritage is preserved, protected, and promoted. The role involves liaising with government agencies, developers, Traditional Owners, Heritage Advisors and the wider community to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.

Key responsibilities:

• Review Cultural Heritage Management Plans (CHMPs), permits, assessments, and fieldwork to ensure compliance with the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 (VIC) and BLCAC’s minimum standards.
• Provide expert advice on cultural heritage matters to internal teams, government bodies, developers, and community stakeholders.
• Conduct site surveys and field assessments and record and report on cultural heritage findings.
• Support internal teams in fulfilling cultural heritage obligations and maintaining accurate records and documentation.
• Mentor junior staff and support the delivery of education and training programs for Heritage Advisors.
• Foster respectful, collaborative relationships with Traditional Owners and stakeholders to promote strong cultural heritage outcomes.
• Prepare timely and accurate reports for regulatory bodies, funding agencies, and internal stakeholders.
• Represent BLCAC at forums, meetings, and consultations, advocating for cultural heritage protection and best practice management.

About You:

• Aboriginality is desirable.
• Relevant tertiary / postgraduate qualification in Archaeology, Anthropology, Indigenous Studies, or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience in cultural heritage management, field assessments and CHMP development.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 (VIC) and cultural heritage regulatory frameworks.
• Experience working with Traditional Owners groups and understanding of Indigenous cultural protocols.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
• Proficiency in GIS mapping software, data analysis and Microsoft Office applications.
• Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet compliance requirements.
