About the team:
The Policy, Safety and Quality team plays an important role in managing a wide range of key stakeholder relationships, both internally and externally. It is responsible for the college’s safety and quality portfolio, developing submissions for government and non-government bodies in Australia and New Zealand, supporting health equity initiatives (Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Māori health and global health), managing government relations and the college’s Specialist Training Program activities.
Much of this work involves communicating with internal and external stakeholders.
About the opportunity:
The primary role of the Safety and Quality Policy Manager will be to:
- Oversee the functions supporting the college’s safety and quality agenda in anaesthesia and pain medicine including relevant sub-committees.
- Oversee the college’s health equity (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Māori health and global development) agenda including relevant committees.
- Identify, build relationships and engage with government and other relevant health sector stakeholders and establish collaborative partnerships with external stakeholders and organisations.
- Oversee the development of important safety and quality and health equity information for dissemination to ANZCA fellows, trainees and specialist international medical graduates (SIMGs) and other key stakeholders.
- Support the Executive Director, Policy and Communications by monitoring, reviewing and building policy priorities and processes across the unit so approaches are contemporary and support the college’s mission and strategic directions.
This is a permanent, full-time role reporting to the Executive Director, Policy and Communications. It will have three direct reports;
- Senior Policy Advisor (Safety and Quality)
- Senior Policy Officer (Health Equity)
- Policy Officer, Professional Documents
The role oversees four committees and their sub-committees and working groups:
- Safety and Quality Committee
- Perioperative Allergy Sub-Committee
- Mortality Sub-Committee
- Australian and New Zealand Tripartite Anaesthetic Data Committee
- Indigenous Health Committee
- Global Development Committee
- Essential Pain Management Steering Committee
- Lifebox ANZ Working Group
- Perioperative Medicine Advocacy and Policy Committee
This position involves work outside normal business hours to manage cyclical fluctuations, for committee meetings, teleconferences and conferences. Some interstate travel may be required.

The role will ideally suit a solutions-focused individual with strong stakeholder management and team leadership experience.
Specifically, you will have:
Essential
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in public health, policy or related field.
- Extensive experience in developing and implementing strategic policy combined with a broad understanding of the mechanisms and processes of government.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and interpersonal skills and experience working collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders and building effective relationships to influence and facilitate outcomes.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, and an ability to write briefing notes, present, persuade, advocate, negotiate and motivate.
- Demonstrated ability to research, conceptualise and synthesise information and to think strategically.
- Excellent planning, organising, time management and logistics management skills, the ability to effectively handle conflicting priorities, establish timeframes and meet deadlines.
- Strong initiative and self-leadership, the ability to work effectively without direct supervision.
- Meticulous attention to detail and ability to keep records during document development processes.
- Excellent skills in leading strong teams.
- Strong team orientation, ability to work collaboratively as a part of an inter-professional team.
- Computer skills:
- Intermediate to advanced - MS Word, Outlook, Excel.
- Aptitude to learn and competently use the website content management system.
- Conduct internet research.
Desirable
- A minimum of five years’ policy or research experience in a health sector environment.
- A clinical or health-related background whilst not essential is advantageous.
